  • (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

The socket-stone of a medieval cross, now placed on a small mound of earth on the lawn of Walton Hall, was found c. 1956, in breaking up a paved yard in the farm buildings [centred at SK 3654 6963]. It had been re-used as a paving-stone; no other cross-fragments were noticed. The stone is c. lm square, with chamfered corners and a square socket. It may have come from the nearby chapel site (SMR 14603), but this seems unlikely having regard to the minor status of this chapel. See GP : AO/60/16/5 - Socket-stone from south. Surveyed 6.4.60. (1) No change. (2)
