Full Description

17th-18th century bell pits of up to 12m (40ft) diameter, circular with rim spoil heaps, for extracting coal. A tramroad of later date [SMR 15337] ran through the group to iron furnaces at Furnacehill. (1-3) In Mulberry Wood there are the remains of old coal/ironstone bell pits of c. 40ft in diameter, mostly circular rather than oval, with spoil rims. (4)
