Milepost, Stretton Road, Clay Cross, an early 19th century structure. 'Cast iron milepost on the A61, the old Chesterfield to Derby turnpike road.' (1) From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 36 SE TOWN OF CLAY CROSS STRETTON ROAD 2/30 (West Side) Milepost 15 metres east of Rose Villa II Milepost. Early C19. Cast iron. Triangular sectioned base with moulded front angle. Flat back, with segmental arched head, curving forward to form horizontal panel below. North side inscribed 'DERBY/18 MILES'. South side inscribed 'CHESTERFIELD/ 5 MILES, DRONFIELD/11 MILES, SHEFFIELD/17 MILES'. Raised panel on front inscribed 'J HAYWOOD JNR/PHOENIX FOUNDRY/DERBY'. Back, above, inscribed 'TOWNSHIP OF STRETTON' Listing NGR: SK3924162588.' (2)
