Full Description

Ordnance Survey maps indicate that Apperknowle Colliery was established after the late 1870s (1), but disused by 1898. Structures in existence at the end of the 19th century included a single shaft and an 'old kiln'. (2) The mine supplied coal via a tramway (SMR 14539) to the railway line and the coke ovens at Unstone Main Colliery (SMR14538) which had closed, probably due to water problems.
