Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

An Anglo Saxon iron axe head found 3 feet deep in gravel at the Borrowfield Estate in June 1898 is now in Derby Museum. (1) No further information. (2) Re-examination of the iron axe head has cast doubt on the dating of this find. Such artefacts are rare from an early Anglo-Saxon context and its form suggests that it is probably of medieval date. (3)
