Full Description

Roman lead spindle whorl dug up in allotments 1953. (1) Found by a pupil of the late Dudley Searson, a school teacher at Codnor. The spindle-whorl was accepted as Roman by Prof. Richmond. A lead 'nozzle' was found at the same time and is probably contemporary. (2) The present whereabouts of the spindle-whorl was not established. The 'nozzle' - probably another, cruder spindle-whorl - is in the possession of Mr W Steeples, Heanor UDC Rating Officer. The area indicated comprises a number of allotment gardens on a southern slope - nothing of significance was seen. The finder was not traced. (3)
