Full Description

A smithy is situated at the southern end of this area on the 1st edition 25" OS map of c. 1880. (1) By the 2nd edition 25" OS map of c. 1900, there are two sand pits to the north of the smithy. (2) The sand pits are shown as quarries on the 3rd edition 25" OS map of the early 20th century. (3) Marked as 'Quarry (disused)' on the 1:10000 OS map of 1976. (4) Earthwork quarry of post-medieval date seen as one very large (>50m) oblong negative feature. Mapped using good quality aerial photographs. Centred at SK 2765 1858. (5)
