Full Description

(SK 3875 2970) 'Old Shaft' named on OS map of early 1880s, with various small and possibly flooded pits (not named) in fields immediately north and east, and a possible shaft (not named) shown as an earthwork at SK 3910 2970. (1) (Group Centred SK 3895 2975) Old Shaft(s) named on map of 1923 (five times). (2) No shafts depicted on the OS map of 1982 - area shown as enclosed fields and rough ground. (3) The shafts shown on the maps of 1887 and 1923 (1, 2) form part of a wide area of clay mining, comprising earthwork shafts of post medieval date seen on good quality aerial photographs as seventeen small (1-4m) round negative features, in a random pattern. Centred at:- SK 3914 2985, Additional NGR'S: SK 3918 2999, SK 3943 2998, SK 3910 2966 and SK 3886 2977. (4)
