Full Description

Milepost, Castleton Road, Hope, possibly an early 19th century structure. Post medieval milepost set against the wall of Veinbutt Villas, to the west of Hope. It is cast-iron, in good condition, and painted white with black lettering. The west face reads 'SHEFFIELD / 15 MILES / HATHERSAGE / 5 MILES' and the east face reads 'CASTLETON / 1 MILE / CHAPEL EN LE / FRITH / 7 MILES'. The milepost is on the 1758 Sheffield-Sparrowpit Gate turnpike road. (1-2) From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 18 SE PARISH OF HOPE CASTLETON ROAD 7/73 (South Side) Mile Post east of Marston Farm - SK159834 II Mile post. Cast iron. Triangular in plan, the upper part cut away in concave curve. Inscribed CASTLETON/1 MILE/CHAPEL EN LE/FRITH/7 MILES. SHEFFIELD/15 MILES/ HATHERSAGE/5 MILES. Listing NGR: SK1595483412.' (3)
