Excavations were carried out on Station Road on a number of occasions between 1975-78 by T. Courtney. Possible pre-Roman use was indicated by evidence for pit-cutting or quarrying. Part of a rampart and ditch of the late Neronian/ early Flavian fort were found. Defences of the Later fort were also found probably of Flavian date as were defences of a possible third fort of C2 date. Evidence of interior buildings of timber and stone and industrial activity were also found. (1)
