Full Description

Old Clay Shafts (named on map) at SK 3222 1898 and SK 3229 1898 on the 1st edition 25" OS map of c. 1880. (1) Old Clay Shaft (named on map) at SK 3222 1898 on the 2nd edition 25" OS map of c. 1900. The other shaft as SK 3229 1898 is now in use as a Clay Mine (named on map) connected by a tramway (named on map) to a nearby Earthenware Works. (2) There is a mound depicted on the site of the shaft at SK 3222 1898 on early 20th century mapping. (3-4) There is no indication of the shaft on the 1:10 000 OS map of 1977. The area is shown as enclosed field. (5) Earthwork shaft of post-medieval date seen as one small (1-4m) round negative feature. Mapped using good quality aerial photographs. Centred at: SK 3223 1897. (6) Land has been returned to cultivation [1994]; no sign of the shaft of authority 6. (7)
