Full Description

Old Toll House, Derby Road, Ashbourne, a mid-19th century building. Toll house sited at the junction of the Derby road and Old Derby Road. (1) Examination of the 1st and 2nd ed. 25" OS maps suggests that an earlier toll house lay c30m to the north-west, being depicted as 'Old Toll House'. The site now lies below the road. (2, 3) 'Red brick with slate roof.' (4) From the National Heritage List for England: 'DERBY ROAD 1. 783 (South-West Side) Old Tollhouse SK 14 NE 4/131 II 2. Mid C19. Tollhouse on the later part of the Derby Turnpike Road. Victorian Tudor. Red brick, slate roof with bands of fishscale tiles. Gabled with fretted bargeboards and finials. Tudor style windows with elaborate glazing. Massive chimney stack and subsidiary chimneys. T shaped building with the stem of the T facing the new road. Below the gable is the former signboard, now blank. Listing NGR: SK1903245439.' (5)
