Full Description

[SK 250 628]: DUCHESS OF SUTHERLAND STONE. The 'Duchess of Sutherland Stone' has a coronet and is inscribed 'HS 1830' (1). RCHME FIELD DESCRIPTION (2) SK 25064 62895: INSCRIBED STONE The 'Duchess of Sutherland Stone' is an outcrop of rock overlloking the E facing escarpment of Stanton Moor. On the outcrop is a rectangular niche cut into the E face of the outcrop, and contains a coronet sculptured in relief and a raised tablet bearing the inscription 'HS 1830'. These are probably quarrymens' graffiti of a very high standard.
