Full Description

[SK 250 634]: DUKE OF YORK STONE. A rock known as the 'Duke of York Stone' bearing a coronet and the inscription 'Y 1826' and another inscribed 'G1834' are recorded (1). RCHME FIELD DESCRIPTION (2) The inscriptions noted by Heathcote were not located. SK 25088 63460. INSCRIBED STONE. Cut into the vertical N face of a rock outcrop is a rectangular niche containing a crown sculptured in relief and a raised tablet bearing the inscription 'G1834'. Approx. 2.5m N of this at SK 25088 63462 is another N facing vertical rock face bearing the inscription 'AGEN 1854'. These are probably quarrymens' graffiti of a very high standard.
