Full Description

A stone axe was found in the back garden of a house on Gritstone Road, Matlock in circa 1984 during work for an extension. It was found 3ft down. The axe was taken into Sheffield City Museum. Macroscopic examination indicated that it was greenstone or epidorite rock. There was a close resemblance to Group 1 in shape (the 'Bridlington' type) and a Cornish origin was considered likely. (1) The grid reference provided (SK 30946122) is Chesterfield Road and therefore not exact.
