Full Description

Cast iron milepost on the A515 Ashbourne-Buxton road. The upper part reads 'London ? Miles, Derby ? Miles', one side reads 'Buxtone 14 miles', and one 'Ashbourne 6 Miles'. The top part of the stone is broken. The stone is on the 1738 Buxton-Ashbourne Turnpike, but the mileages relate to the 1771 amendment. Photographic record. (1). Comparison with the next milepost in the series suggests that the upper part would have read 'LONDON / 147 MILES / DERBY / 19 MILES'. Only the '19 MILES' is still visible, the rest of the top appears to have broken away. Below, on the flat upper surface of the triangular body of the milepost is 'ALSOP EN LE DALE / PARISH'. (2)
