Full Description

Cast-iron milepost, painted white with 'LONDON' and banding painted black, c. 1.5m high. Sited on the south side of Main Road, Taddington, between two rows of cottages. 'LONDON' is cast into the body of the milepost. (1) Early 19th century cast iron milepost with a circular shaft and a broader circular body with raised bead moulding and a domed top, around which 'LONDON' in inscribed. The rest of the information was painted and is no longer visible. (2) The milepost has been repainted and lettering added. It now reads 'LONDON 157' around the top, with 'BUXTON / 6' on one side of the body and 'BAKEWELL / 5½' on the other. (3)
