Full Description

Cast-iron milepost on the wide grass verge on the south side of the road. (1). Grade II listed mile post, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of cast iron with a triangular section base, with moulded front angle, curving upwards to form a flat back with a segmental head. The north side is inscribed: 'ASHBOURNE / 13 MILES' and 'J HAYWOOD JNR / PHOENIX WORKS / DERBY'. The south side is inscribed: 'BUXTON / 7 MILES' and 'J HAYWOOD JNR / PHOENIX WORKS / DERBY'. The front is inscribed: 'LONDON' in large letters in an arc. Below is: '152 MILES / DERBY / 26 MILES'. Below again, on a horizontal section, is a raised area inscribed 'HARTINGTON PARISH'. (2).
