Full Description

The Cromford & High Peak Railway deviation in the vicinity of Hillhead Quarry (SK 09620 68440 - SK 06670 70650). This represents the original, pre-1892, route of the Cromford & High Peak Railway, which meanders through the area hugging the line of the contour. In the east, where the line first deviates from the alignment of the later Cromford & High Peak Railway line, there is a turning triangle. The rest of the line is made up from a series of boundary wall, embankments, a cutting and a section of in situ, though not original, sleepers. The best preserved sections of the deviation occur at the western and eastern extremities, where it lies within grazed farmland. Much of the track inbetween lies within areas of quarrying, where little survives. Tarmac purchased the railway in the 1980's. Prior to this the area had been quarried up to the boundary, therefore the quarry face follows the line of the railway. There is great potential for finding the entire line of the railway preserved in the first section of the quarry, after this the line has been either destroyed or buried under massive waste tips.
