Full Description
NGR: SK 29060 55580 - SK 28416 55194. Drystone wall starting with a gatepost of heavily tooled gritstone blocks, approximately 1m high. As the Cromford & High Peak Railway track goes over two roads, it becomes a retaining wall to revet the embankment along which the track runs. The foot of the retaining wall is of large, regular gritstone blocks in distinct courses. At the top of the wall (from the level of the trackbed), the stones are smaller, regular and also laid in distinct courses. At the National Stone Centre it continues as a retaining wall to revet the embankment. At Coals Hill Quarry the wall stops as the quarry is either side of the track, which is carried by an embankment. The wall turns south and ends by being built up against the quarry face. (1)
