Monument record MDR9442 - Embankment, Middleton Incline; Cromford & High Peak Railway

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

Embankment rising approximately 5m high from Middleton Bottom to the west end of a bridge (SMR 28313), where the rock face and cutting begin. The embankment was (presumably) designed to build up the ground on the incline in order to make it a gradual slope. There appears to be a line of gritstone blocks, some of which are reused sleepers, along the edge of the track where the embankment starts. There is a sloping drystone embankment wall constructed of limestone. NGR: SK 28264 55172 - SK 28078 55181
