Full Description
Rectangular brick and stone underground structure, approximately 14m x 7m. The structure houses the wheel and rope machinery for hauling the locomotives up the incline; the machinery is powered from the engine and boiler houses. The wheel is approximately 1m diameter and fixed to the side of the engine house. The wheel is made of iron and acted as a rope-guide for the ropes which exited the engine house. The ropes were set in motion by the engine house, which then pulled the wheel pit machinery which, in turn, pulled more ropes and wheels. (1-6)
