Full Description
The mile stone in front of the Holly Bush Inn is a Grade II structure engraved with the date 1779 [this date is incorrect as the listing photograph clearly shows the date as 1739] and "Derby Coach Road". It is a plain stone set into the ground and standing upright in front of the public house wall. This was the turnpike road to Derby before the valley road was built by the Strutts in 1818. (1)
Guide stone at the side of the old Derby to Chesterfield coach road, by the Holly Bush Inn. Approximately 5 ft high, inscribed 'Derby Coach Road - 1739'. Comparison of photographs taken in 1979 and in 1988 shows that the road level has been raised considerably, so that the stone is now much shorter. (2)
