Source/Archive record SDR23151 - Monthly Archaeological Reports: Cromford Mill Excavations

Title Monthly Archaeological Reports: Cromford Mill Excavations
Author/Originator
Date/Year 1986-8

Abstract/Summary

During 1986-8, considerable archaeological activity was undertaken at Cromford Mill. The work concentrated on the area roughly delineated by the east wall of the first mill building, the north side of the five storey warehouse building, and extending across to the remains of the 'Bow Fronted Building'. The excavations were supervised by a trained archaeologist using labour under the then Community Programme Scheme. Unfortunately the excavation archives have been lost, and an incomplete set of monthly reports written by Patrick Strange, who visited the excavations regularly, are all that remain to document the work. These monthly reports each include a brief description and some sketches on the areas and features exposed. These features were, in some cases, subsequently removed, and in others retained.
