Description
This record has been generated from an "old county number" (OCN) scheduling record. These are monuments that were not reviewed under the Monuments Protection Programme and are some of our oldest designation records. As such they do not yet have the full descriptions of their modernised counterparts available.
The Pinfold and Lockup are situated in the old market place of Sandiacre and date from about Charles II. The pinfold is surrounded by a stone wall 19ft x 22ft and 6ft high. In the corner is the lock up 9ft square and 12ft high. There are two windows and a door leading into the market place. A shelf running the length of the lockup is said to be the sleeping apartment of the prisoner. The condition of the lockup was rather poor, holes appearing in the roof and the stonework crumbling away. The Derbys Archaeological Society has suggested that it should be preserved and scheduled. It apparently is in danger of demolition.<1>
