Description

Parish church. C13, C14, C15 and C16, south aisle added and major restoration completed 1878. Coursed rubble and coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, leaded aisle roofs and concrete tiles elsewhere. West tower, three bay nave with north and south aisles, chancel with south organ bay, north chapel and north vestry. Moulded plinth throughout. C15 west tower has two tall stages with chamfered band between and almost full height wide stepped diagonal buttresses to western corners. Small pointed chamfered C19 west door with large 3-light pointed Perpendicular window over in deep cavetto moulded surround, plus small stair window to right. Stepped eastern buttresses to half way up first stage on north and south sides. Pointed 2-light louvred bell openings to all sides with returned hoodmoulds and cusped Y-tracery, small stair window below western opening, and clockface below southern one. Eaves stringcourse with central gargoyles. Embattled parapets with crocketed corner pinnacles. C16 north aisle has four-centred arched doorcase below flat headed 2-light window with Perpendicular tracery to west end and two 3-light flat headed windows in cavetto moulded surrounds with semi-circular headed lights and incised spandrels to north. Buttresses between bays and to corner, and blocking course with moulded copings above. Gabled north chapel to east, C19, with 3-light Perpendicular traceried window to north with hoodmould and trefoil window above. Vestry, against chancel wall to east, has 2-light flat headed window with trefoil headed lights and hoodmould to north, and four-centred arched door to east. 3-light pointed C19 east window to chancel is flanked by diagonal buttresses. South chancel elevation has C19 single light flat headed window with returned hoodmould and cusped tracery. South organ bay to west has trefoil headed lancet with hoodmould to east and similar 3-light window to south. Aisle has two 3-light flat headed windows with hoodmoulds, ogee headed lights and incised spandrels, flanking central gabled porch with moulded pointed doorcase. Stepped diagonal buttresses to corners of aisle and porch, blocking course with moulded copings over. Large lancet to west wall of nave. Interior has three bay north and south arcades, those to north C14 with stiled pointed double chamfered arches on tapering octagonal piers with moulded capitals, those to south C19 copies. Double chamfered pointed chancel arch with soffit on moulded corbels, plus hoodmould with foliage stops, and tall triple chamfered pointed tower arch, now with glazed screen. Pointed arches to north and south side of chancel, that to north C14. Also to north C13 trefoil headed doorcase with keel moulded jambs, moulded imposts and nailhead enrichment to cusped arch. Pair of small pointed arches on large central column with moulded capital between north chapel and aisle. Small pointed doorcase from south aisle to organ bay. All chancel fittings c1935 including timber rood screen with cusped arcaded top. Pulpit of similar date. C14 octagonal stone font with quartrefoils to each side of bowl and moulded stem. Small trefoil headed piscina to chancel. Numerous monuments including fine late C17 one to Francis Revel with broken pedimented top and gadrooned base on winged sculls, similar one c1768 to John Downing, two simple plaques over angel head corbels of c1797 and c1703, both to,members of Revel family and several early and mid C19 slate and white marble wall memorials, also two late C19 ones with Gothick aedicules.
