PARISH OF DALE ABBEY THE VILLAGE SK 43 NW 5/27 (West Side) 10.11.67 Friars House GV II
House. C15, C17 and C18. Coursed squared gritstone, close studded timber framing and red brick. Plain tile roof, brick coped gables with plain kneelers. Brick gable stacks. Two storeys and attics. East elevation of four irregular bays. Right hand half has gritstone walling to ground floor, re-used from Dale Abbey. This has a casement window and a small pane fixed light, and a doorway to the right with stone lintel and plank door. Red brick above with first and second floor brick bands. The first floor has a 2-light and a 3-light casement window. Attic above with one small square window. Dentil cornice to taller, right hand part. Left hand part has close studded C17 timber framing to part of the ground floor, with one curved brace. Jettied upper floor with two uprights and the wall plate visible, the rest replaced in brick. The ground floor has a doorway with panelled door, a C20 casement window to the right and a C19 3-light casement to the left. The first floor has two C19 3-light casements. Stone ground floor continues on north elevation and half of the west elevation. Brick above with first and second floor bands. Irregular, mostly C19 fenestration. Entrance hall with inglenook with C18 stone fireplace with bracketed lintel. Staircase with C17 massive turned balusters, probably re-used. Exposed beams.
