Description
'PARISH OF IDRIDGEHAY AND ALTON WIRKSWORTH ROAD SK 25 SE 1/59 Alton Manor and attached stable range to north east GV II Small Country House 1846-7 by Sir G G Scott. Ashlar gritstone, rising from a shallow plinth, with coped gables, moulded kneelers, tall ashlar ridge stacks with octagonal shafts and a concrete tiled roof, formerly stone slated. Irregular 'L' plan house. Built in the Elizabethan style. Two storeys and attics. South east elevation, gabled to south west end, and with porch in the angle. Four centred arched head to moulded doorway, decorated spandrels to archway and a panelled door. Stepped hoodmould above door, and coat of arms above archway. Above doorway, a pointed oriel window, and above that an octagonal tower with a pierced parapet. Tall mullioned and transomed windows. South west (garden) elevation, with advanced gable to north west end, canted two storey bay with crenellated parapet and grotesque spouts. Continuous stringcourse. Single gabled dormer above mullioned and transomed window. Advanced bay to south east end. Adjoining stable range to north east, of two storeys, with gabled entrance bay to the yard, with moulded four-centred archway, to north east corner, an ogee cupola, with lead covering and blind semi-circular headed lights.
