Description

House. c1630 with C19 alterations. Coursed rubble coal measures sandstone with quoins, coped gables, ridge stacks of brick and stone, plain tiles and stone slates. Irregular 'U' plan house, with central range and advanced gabled crosswings at either end, and a lobby entry against one of the stacks which is now blocked. Two storeys and attics, three bays, formerly with recessed chamfer mullioned windows throughout, now with many mullions removed and replaced by C19 casements. Central range with original doorway with quoined surround, now blocked with a 2-light window, and a 3-light chamfer mullioned window beneath a dripmould, now modified to incorporate a doorway, and above a first floor 3-light chamfer mullioned window with a dripmould. Advanced crosswings with stacked windows diminishing in width and height from ground to attic floors, all formerly mullioned, now with all but four mullions replaced by C19 casements in old stone surrounds beneath dripmoulds. The return walls to the crosswings both have ground floor doorways, that to the south wing with a quoined surround, and now blocked, the north wing having an opening inserted into the position of a former 2-light mullioned window. Single light C17 windows above the doorways on each side. The other elevations all retain 2 and 3-light openings beneath dripmoulds, some retaining C17 mullions. Interior much altered, but with many spine beams and joists exposed, two good hearths, and a partition beam with mortices for former studs. Double purlin roof with ridge purlin.
