Description
PARISH OF HOLMESFIELD FOX LANE (off) SK 37 NW 5/157 Knowles Farmhouse II Farmhouse. Early C17, 1696, with C19 and C20 alterations and additions. Coursed rubble gritstone with ashlar dressings, quoins, plain gables, gable and ridge stacks, stone slated and tiled roof coverings. L-plan house. South-east elevation, two storeys, five bays, the two bays to the south-west slightly taller, with 2 and former 4-light late C17 mullioned windows, the 2-light opening with dripmould integral with the window head, the former 4-light opening now retaining a single mullion. To the south-west a first floor C19 opening. Lower three bays with central doorway with stone jambs and lintel now blocked with a circular window, beneath stepped hoodmould which continues to the south-west to cover a 4-light mullioned window which incorporates a shallow C17 single light. Above, a 2-light chamfer mullion, a single light opening above the door, and to the north-east a 3-light recessed chamfer mullioned window, above a 2-light C20 chamfer mullioned window. Single storey C20 gabled porch to north-east end. Rear elevations much altered, but with former doorway near to the angle of the two ranges with plain hoodmould, stone jambs and deep lintel with inscription S AA 1696
