Description

Memorial. Dated 1846. Ashlar gritstone, rising from a stepped base, square on plan, with four double chamfered archways supported by buttressed corner piers, stepped, with set-offs. To the heads of the arches ashlar panels pierced by quatrefoils. Above a squat octagonal ashlar spire, rising from a corbel table with animal heads, the spire having miniature lucarnes and terminating in a cross finial. Plaque commemorating the erection of the monument to the repeal of the corn laws, dated June 26th 1846. The monument is said to stand on the site of the former town cross. Listing NGR: SK3506978481
