SK 26 SW PARISH OF HARTHILL CLIFF LANE 4/13 (North Side) Alport Mill GV II
Cornmill, now trout farm. C18 with mid C19 alterations and additions. Coursed limestone rubble, except west wall of C18 part in coursed squared gritstone, with gritstone dressings and quoins. C20 stone slate roof with louvred drying vent to ridge of northern addition. C18 mill three storeys with later two storey and single storey additions. Irregular plan with C18 mill to south, C19 addition to rear and two single storey lean-tos at different levels to west. Rim-drive C19 water wheel, 21 feet in diameter and five feet wide, attached to east side of C18 section. South elevation has one glazing bar sash in flush surround to ground floor, whilst west elevation has 2-light C18 flush mullion window to ground floor with similar window above and further one above that. Rear elevation has Cl9 windows to C18 section and quoined doorcase with loft opening above. Interior has, probably mid C19,arrangement of five sets of stones arranged over a long drive shaft with bevel gearing to each set of stones. Drying kiln to C19 addition. This is known to have been the site of a watermill since the C12.
