Description

House. 1703. Red brick with painted stone dressings. Plain tile roof, brick coped gables with plain kneelers. First and second floor brick bands. Moulded eaves cornice. Three storeys. Symmetrical east elevation of five bays. Flight of six steps with low curved parapet walls up to central doorcase with eared architrave and pediment on consoles. Panelled double doors. Flanked on each side by two glazing bar sashes (four over four) under wedge brick lintels with stepped keyblocks. Five similar windows above and five similar but smaller windows above again. Interior: Open string staircase with carved tread ends, three turned balusters per tread, wreathed and ramped handrail. The upper flight has stick balusters of the later C18. Dentil cornice. North ground floor room has early C18 panelling and double cornice. Entablature and cornice of a late C18 chimneypiece. Keyed round-arched china cupboard. South room has a C19 marble chimneypiece and late C18 round-arched alcove. Room beyond has a small early C18 bolection moulded stone chimneypiece and the remains of C17 style panelling. The north west wing has a large room with late C18 style decoration, made into a picture gallery in the 1930s. Upper rooms to east have panelled dados, an C18 chimneypiece in the north room and a C19 Hopton Wood chimneypiece in the south room. Listing NGR: SK3069326437
