SK 32 NE PARISH OF STANTON-BY-BRIDGE STANTON HILL 3/235 (East Side) St Bride's 10.11.67 Farmhouse GV II Farmhouse. Mid C18 with early C19 and C20 alterations and additions, also with re-set C12 and C13 stones. Rubble stone with quoins and red brick, with brick dressings. Plain tile roofs with brick gable stack to west and brick ridge stack to eastern section. Sawtooth eaves band to western section. Two storeys and four bays, that to west lower. This lower part has a wide segment headed 3-light casement window to west and a segment headed doorcase with C20 glazed door to east. Just beyond this in the stonework is a small re-set C12 segment headed tympanum with a carving of an animal to the centre. Adjoining to east is the main part of the house, constructed of stone rubble, which has a segment headed doorcase with C20 glazed door and divided overlight to west, a central brick lean-to with 3-light casement window and a 2-light segment headed window with C20 casement to east. Above there are three similar 2-light windows and to west in the lower part is a segment headed 3-light small pane casement. Between the two easternmost windows on the ground floor is a re-set C12 semi- circular headed window head with chevron carving on and built in to the rear elevation is a C13 coffin lid with incised carving. Interior has chamfered beams and one large inglenook in the western room. This was the site of a former grange or chapel attached to Burton Abbey and the early stones have presumably been re-used from those buildings. Listing NGR: SK3691125176
