SHINE: Linacre Hall (site of), Linacre Wood, Brampton (DDR8797)

The site of Linacre House, a 17th or 18th century building demolished in the 20th century, which may have stood on the site of the medieval Linacre Hall Linacre Hall, in the parish of Brampton, is named in a deed dated to 14 April 1519. Linacre House is then mentioned on William Senior's map of Linacre dated 1630. Linacre House was vacated in 1938 when the Water Board deemed the farm to be a possible health hazard to the reservoirs below, and later it was demolished. The site of the building now lies buried beneath the car park, the surface of which is now considerably higher than the previous ground level. There was the possibility of locating the remains of an earlier building before the demolished Linacre House. Three trial trenches were excavated. An upper strata of modern building debris covered a deep former land surface, made up of sucessive layers (as confirmed with auger survey.) Former building foundations could possibly still remain, but are covered with the very deep strata of land surface (1994).
