Full Description

Milepost, Main Road, Shirland and Higham, an early 19th century structure. Cast iron milepost with a triangular sectioned base, and a flat back with a segmental head, curving forward to form horizontal panel below. Painted white, with black raised lettering. The north side is inscribed 'DERBY/16 MILES'. The south side is inscribed 'CLAY CROSS / 2 MILES / CHESTERFIELD / 7 MILES / DRONFIELD / 13 MILES / SHEFFIELD / 19 MILES'. The flat back has 'TOWNSHIP / OF / HIGHAM' and in smaller letters on the front panel is 'J HAYWOOD JNR / PHOENIX FOUNDRY / DERBY'. The width of the milepost is 20 ins, and the visible height is 43 ins. (1) From the National Heritage List for England: 'PARISH OF SHIRLAND & HIGHAM MAIN ROAD 38/39 58 38/39 59 6/42 (East Side) Mile post 14 metres north of Quarry Farmhouse, Higham II Mile post. Early C19. Cast iron. Triangular sectioned base with moulded front angle. Flat back with segmental head, curving forward to form horizontal panel below. North side inscribed 'DERBY/16 MILES'. South side inscribed 'CLAY CROSS/ 2 MILES, CHESTERFIELD/7 MILES, DRONFIELD/13 MILES, SHEFFIELD/19 MILES'. Back inscribed 'TOWNSHIP OF HIGHAM'.
