The area is shown on a late 19th century OS map as containing 'Mines' and 'Old Shafts (Lead)'. An OS map at the end of the 19th century shows 'Old Lead Mines' and 'Old Lead Shafts' within the area. (1, 2) Lead mining remains were identified within the area during survey in 2008. A line of well-preserved roughly circular earth banked depressions, measuring c. 10m by 8m, were identified at SK 2969 5803, running north following a mineral seam into woodland, at the top of the scarp on the eastern side of the Derwent.
