War memorial, The Slopes, Buxton, erected c1920. 'The War Memorial on St Ann's Slopes, Buxton, takes the form of a sandstone obelisk with a winged angel facing north and holding aloft in her left hand a wreath and carrying a naked sword in her right. It was sculpted by L F Roslyn RBS of London. Plaques carrying the names of the 1914-18 dead are attached to the south, east and west faces, whilst those of the 1939-45 war are on the south plinth. The whole is set in a flagged garden of remembrance and is floodlit.' Two step square base with curved front, supports rectangular base with plinth and projecting curved front bearing bronze inscription, PRO PATRIA, 1914+1918, 1939+1945. Above tall obelisk with laurel band and pyramidal cap, bears bronze panels on three sides, and at the front a bronze figure of a winged angel holding a sword brandishing a laurel wreath.
