Monument record MDR15669 - Rotary quern rough-outs and possible quern working site, Shining Cliff Woods, Alderwasley

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

Seven rotary quern stone rough outs have been noted on the steep grit stone slopes to the east. They are unfinished and therefore difficult to date, but typologically they may be early medieval. It can be seen that the stones are greater in diameter than the Romano-British examples recorded by Palfreyman and Ebbins in at Blackbrook (2007) suggesting that they are not Romano-British, although it is not possible to estimate the finished diameter.
