Full Description
Cabel Wilcock's Field, off B5056, Winster.
Record was previously a duplication of records MDR8376. (1-4)
'Field shown on 1761 enclosure map as belonging to Cabel Wilcock. A 1750 document indicated that Wilcock made rope for bell ringers and miners. As a result it was suggested that the long open field was a ropewalk.' (5)
'The view that the field served as a ropewalk is likely to be incorrect: Wilcock was evidently making rope in 1750, well before 1761, and the structure at the west end of the field is typical of a field barn; a stoutly built structure in stone, with facilities for storing hay and providing shelter for livestock. Whereas the structure associated with an open air ropewalk would have been a light timber structure containing winding equipment. Furthermore, a document of 1812 indicates that the premises at which Wilcock made his rope was elsewhere. It extended over a larger area and contained a dwelling (i.e. it probably lay somewhere in the village rather than outside of it.' (6)
An historic building survey of the barn at the edge of this field was carried out in 2021. (7)
