Full Description

Former site of the south range at Berristow Farm, Cartwright Lane, South Normanton, a 19th century building. An historic building survey was carried out in 2021 prior to the farms demolition: The southern range was constructed entirely of brick. The footprint of the building is evident in the [1880's] OS map. In the buildings final form, it was a pig sty, with three piggeries flanked by two end rooms. On the southern side of the building was a feeding passage. The roof was corrugated fibre. The final use of the east end room was a vehicle shelter. Which also had a plank door leading to the feeding passage. The west end room had a door and window facing the farmyard and a larger window its western gable. (1) Following the demolition of the farm, an evaluation carried out in 2021 recorded parts of the complex: 'Trenching within the footprint of Berristow Farm (Trenches 33 and 34) did not locate any features to suggest an earlier origin to the farm complex. The walls ...are consistent with the northern range of farmyard buildings. …[there was] also looks to have been a contemporary drain.' (2) A desk-based assessment was carried out in 2018. (3)
