Full Description

Square area, possible enclosure, north of Yellowslacks Brook, east of Glossop, Charlesworth, of unknown date. A member of the public informed the HER of a squarish area, possibly an earthwork or an enclosure, visible on LiDAR. (1) The area measures approximately 80m on a side. The area is not clearly visible on current Google imagery (Google Earth), with the possible exception of Google Earth imagery dating to 2018. Given the regular, squarish appearance visible on LiDAR, a suggestion was made that this could be the result of Roman activity. The absence of clear features or 'crop marks' in aerial imagery and the unusual topographic location suggests otherwise, but it is noted that it is c300m away from the Roman Road the Doctors Gate, and c5km away from Melandra. It might be suggested that it is related to animal husbandry, however, it does not appear on the 1st edition 25" OS map of c1880, nor on the 2nd edition of 1898 or 3rd edition of 1921, and it is notable that the field boundary running roughtly north - south overlies the potential feature. There are at least two sheepfolds in the nearby area.
