Full Description
Parts of the Eastwood-Swingler and Co. Iron Foundry, off Cotton Lane, Derby, a mid-19th century complex.
An evaluation carried out in 2022 revealed extensive structural remains that were part of the mid-19th century Eastwood-Swingler and Co. Iron Foundry: '...likely to date to the earliest use of the site as a foundry. The earliest remains encountered had been heavily truncated by later redevelopment. The flues form an interesting element to the site and would have likely been used in the movement of hot gases for the foundry, while the stone wall [in Trench 2] may indicate part of the earlier foundry buildings from the 19th century.' An assemblage of 19th century pottery, clay tobacco pipe fragments and a relatively large amount of metal was also recovered. (1)
