Full Description

Ridge and furrow, near former Highfields Farm, Bakeacre Lane, Findern, of medieval date. Evidence of ridge and furrow was recorded by excavations carried out in 2017: 'Evidence fo medieval activity was solely represented by the remains of ridge and furrow cultivation. …a couple of intrisive sherds of medieval pottery and a long cross penny dated to 1247-1279 were found within [Roman] ditches, …The furrows probably formed parts of the open fields serving Littleover or Findern. They followed the same general alighnment as both the [Roman] field and enclosure system and its modern successor, all alighned to exploit the sites natural drainage fall to the east.' (1) A gap in the ridge and furrow corresponded to a possible gateway, as the ditch it was situated within corresponded to a field boundary shown on the 1st edition 25" OS map of c1880. These features post dated an extensive Iron Age - Roman settlement at this location. (1-2) An earlier evaluation carried out in 2007 found evidence of probable medieval ridge and furrow throughout most of the study area, corresponding to the results of an earlier geophysical survey. The earthworks in the western part of the site, extending as far as Ryknield Street were aliged northwest - southeast, and northeast - southwest in the east part of the study area. (3) Note that this area of ridge and furrow is surrounded by a larger, probable medieval field system, but this particular area has been recorded by geophysical survey, ecxcavation, and is now [2024] under development and no longer extant. The area was subject to a geophysical survey in 2007, where several anomalies corresponding to these archaeological deposits were recorded. (4) The area was also subject to a fieldwalking survey carried out in 2006, when medieval pottery was reported. (5)
