Railings, gatepiers and gates. Early C18 and 1849. Gates by Robert Bakewell and originally from Etwall Hall. They were re-erected after restoration in 1984. Wrought iron, brick and stone. Low brick walls with chamfered stone copings, to either side of gates, surmounted by plain railings with square stiles, topped by urn finials. Attached at right angles to either end of the railings are pairs of brick gate piers with moulded stone cornices. To the centre of the railings are a large pair of gates set in frame with scrolled panels. Gates very simple with only arrowhead dograil to base and plain square rails. To the top of the frame a splendid overthrow with central painted shield and crest of hawk holding a buckle above, and to either side scrollwork with leaves and flowers. To either side of the frame are side panels, also with scrolled overthrows. The gates were originally made for the Sleigh family of Etwall Hall and the railings were set up in 1849 by the Trustees of the Almshouses when the almsmen rioted.
