Full Description

Hanson Grange, Newton Grange, a late 16th century and early 19th century building. Hanson Grange, Newton Grange. Partially extant 17th century farmstead. The farmstead is formed of a regular courtyard of L-plan with additional detached elements to the main plan and three sides of the yard formed of agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. The site is in an isolated location. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site, suggesting it may remain in agricultural use. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. (1-4) There is little left today of medival granges, either in remains or documentary references, although the word 'grange' is common on maps of Derbyshire. Generally, although not exclusively, the name is attached to a farmhouse. The front of Hanson Grange is early 19th century but the south wall is a patchwork of earlier work including 16th to 17th century mullioned and transomed windows. In the basement are arch light windows which might indicate an earlier date which corresponds to the grange of Burton Abbey which previously existed on the site. (5-6) Hanson Grange was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, inferring that it was constructed c.996. It was a Grange of Burton Abbey which was dissolved in 1538. There are extensive earthworks to the north-west and south of the present farm. (7-10) From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 15 SW PARISH OF NEWTON GRANGE OFF GREEN LANE 4/50 (South Side) 13.9.1967 Hanson Grange II Farmhouse. Late C16 and early C19. Two storeys. East elevation. Angle quoins. Central doorway with raised stone surround with keystone and projecting imposts. Semi-circular top with fanlight. Raised and fielded five panelled door. To the right, a glazing bar sash with stone surround and similar above. Projecting bay to the left with two similar, windows and a first floor stringcourse. South elevation with an external stack and to the right a blocked 3-light mullioned and transomed window to the first floor. To the left, a single light window with a transom and a 3-light mullioned and transomed window with similar above. To the left again,a blocked single light window and a blocked 3-light mullioned window at half height, and a similar blocked 3-light window above. Several of the south side windows with dripmoulds. Former site of a grange of Buxton Abbey and apparently earlier windows in the basement could be connected with this. Nat Gould (1857-1919) the novelist, lived here. Listing NGR: SK1473453806.' (11)
