Full Description

The medieval socle or base stands at the east end of the grave of Charles Henry Fairfax, separate from the Saxon shaft [see SMR 17203] which stands at the west end. The socle consists of an undecorated dressed sandstone block with worn chamfered corners. In the top there is a rectangular socket which measures 36cm by 28cm, which gives an indication of the scale and shape of the missing medieval cross shaft. (1)
