Full Description

Milepost, junction of A61 and B6014, Shirland and Higham, an early 19th century structure. Listed milepost by Joseph Haywood Jr of Phoenix Foundry on the Derby-Chesterfield turnpike. (1) Cast iron milepost, having a triangular sectioned base and a flat back, with a segmental head, curving forward to form a horizontal panel below. Painted white, with raised black lettering. The back is inscribed 'TOWNSHIP / OF / HIGHAM'. The north side of the triangular base is inscribed 'DERBY /17 MILES'. The south side has 'CLAY CROSS / 1 MILE / CHESTERFIELD / 6 MILES / DRONFIELD / 12 MILES / SHEFFIELD / 18 MILES'. The panel on front is inscribed in smaller letters 'J HAYWOOD JUNR / PHOENIX FOUNDRY / DERBY'. The milepost is 20" wide. (2) From the National Heritage List for England: 'SK 36 SE PARISH OF SHIRLAND & HIGHAM MAIN ROAD 2/40 (West Side) Mile post opposite Hilltop Farmhouse II Mile post. Early C19. Cast iron. Triangular sectioned base with moulded front angle. Flat back, with segmental head, curving forward to form horizontal panel below. North side inscribed 'DERBY/17 MILES', South side inscribed 'CLAY CROSS/ 1 MILE, CHESTERFIELD/6 MILES, DRONFIELD/12 MILES, SHEFFIELD/18 MILES'. Back inscribed 'TOWNSHIP OF HIGHAM'. Raised panel on front inscribed 'J HAYWOOD JNR/ PHOENIX FOUNDRY/ DERBY'. Listing NGR: SK3922361010.' (3)
