Monument record MDR7978 - Earthenware works / pottery works (site of), Woodville

This area appears as open ground, a series of fields, on the 1st edition 25" OS map of c. 1800. (1) 'Earthenware Works', with a 'Tramway' connecting the works with a 'Clay Mine' at SK 3239 1898 appear on the 2nd edition 25" OS map of c. 1900. (2) The works area labelled as a pottery on early 20th century mapping. The tramway is not depicted, and the site of the mine is shown as disused. (3-4) The area is depicted as open ground on the 1:10 000 OS map of 1977. (5) Stonework tramway of post-medieval date seen as interrupted forked linear feature defined by one stone foundation, with a maximum length of 130m. Mapped using good quality aerial photographs. Centred at: SK 3229 1899. All that is visible of the mine described by authorities 2-4 is an earthwork spoil heap of post-medieval date seen as one large (15-50m) amorphous positive feature. Mapped using good quality aerial photographs. Centred at: SK 3229 1897. (6) The area is now waste ground [1994]. Area still concreted/tarmaced over, but no foundations seen. Land to the east has been returned to cultivation including site of the clay mine. There is no sign of the connecting tramway. (7)
