Monument record MDR8484 - Cairn (T38), Stanton Moor

[SK 2457 6304]: T38. This feature first appears in the archaeological record depicted on a location map of numbered 'tumuli' on Stanton Moor. (1) Although no excavation report was published for this cairn, it is known that some level of excavation was undertaken by the Heathcotes, probably during the period 1934-1938. (2) Subsequent field investigation by the OS Archaeology Division in 1966 failed to identify this cairn. In a later survey, measurements are given as 18' (5.4m) in diameter and 1.5' (0.45m) high. (3) SK 24578 63057: CAIRN. This monument is a low, sub-rectangular shaped cairn, measuring 4.7m by 5.0m and 0.3m high. It is situated on a stony surface which has been subjected to intense shallow surface quarrying, resulting in much stone litter. A number of partly visible earthfast stones around the perimeter suggest an origianl kerb. The cairn, generally has a consolidated earth and weatherworn stone content, with much stone exposed. It is possible that the SW end of the cairn is undistrubed and may not have been excavated by Heathcote. Circumscribing the mound is evidence of an excavation delineation trench. The size and relative isolation of this cairn would suggest a funerary rather than clearance context. (4)
